Effective September 2007, the Texas State Legislature enacted into the Plumbing License Law additional wording to specifically include water heaters in their list of plumbing fixtures, required by law, to have a plumbing permit issued prior to installation. In addition, the law provides that such installations be done according to current codes by a Wylie TX licensed master plumber and inspected by a licensed plumbing inspector.

The City of Wylie Texas follows the 2012 International Plumbing Code and International Residential Code.
Additional requirements include that a drain pan is required on all water heater installations on the interior of the home or if the water heater is located where it will cause structural damage. If the water heater pan cannot be piped to the outside, a hose bib on the pan opening can be used. This will enable the occupant to attach a hose and run it to the outside. All water heaters must be elevated in the garage 18 inches above floor. Electric water heaters require at quick disconnect if the electric panel is not within sight of the water heater.
Sediment traps are required by all water heater manufacturers.
An expansion tank is needed if water system is on a closed loop system only. Amendments by the City of Wylie include that a carbon monoxide detector is not required.
